In the past people with moderate to severe developmental disabilities were often placed in institutional settings. Nowadays community living options are available.
Diane is a woman with bright blue eyes, a warm smile and a contagious laugh who really enjoys life to the fullest. It’s hard not to smile and be in a good mood when spending time with her. She loves to be around people and is eager to communicate with others. When people visit her, she greets them with a very enthusiastic hug. She enjoys showing off her bedroom and all her clothes, pictures and stuffed animals. Diane uses those bright blue eyes, body language and some gestures to let others know her wants and needs.
In the past people with moderate to severe developmental disabilities were often placed in institutional settings. Nowadays community living options are available. Those with developmental disabilities or traumatic brain injuries can live in an apartment or house of their own with staff who work in their home.
Diane’s story is one of transition, learning, and ongoing success. At the age of seven, Diane was placed in a state institutional care center. It wasn’t until she was 40 that she moved into her own place - an inviting, ranch-style duplex. Suddenly it was a very different world of possibilities for Diane. This year will mark her 10th anniversary living in the community as well as her 50th birthday – two causes for celebration! Diane has done extremely well with the transition and has made many friends with both the staff and her peers. Diane is thriving in her current environment!
Katy Barnum first met Diane in 2003 and has been her Support Broker since 2006. Katy is very much in-tune with Diane’s support needs and challenges. As her
Support Broker, Katy is responsible for ensuring Diane is well cared for by her team of supports and coordinates any services she may need.
Diane loves to be active and participate in community activities and events. Katy and her residential staff make sure she has something planned several days each week – such as shopping, banking, eating at different restaurants, going for walks in neighborhood parks, visiting the zoo, attending birthday and other parties, and agency dances. Diane has also attended the Catholic Charities Support Broker Halloween Bash for the past five years! Katy works with the team to figure out new ways to keep Diane active and involved in her community while keeping in mind the strategies that are necessary to support Diane successfully.
Diane’s move from living in an institution to an integrated member of her community has been a success. Decades ago this would not have been possible, but today Diane is able to spread her infectious laugh and her joy for life to a much wider world, and for that, we are thankful!
